Combi, system or regular?
The right boiler depends on how many bathrooms you have and how you use hot water. We recommend one at the survey; this is the short version.
Combi boiler
Heats water on demand straight from the mains, so there is no cylinder or loft tank. Suits most flats and houses with one bathroom, and frees up a cupboard.
System boiler
Heats a hot water cylinder, usually an unvented one, so several taps and showers can run at once. Suits homes with two or more bathrooms.
Regular (heat-only) boiler
Works with a cylinder and a cold water tank in the loft. Often the right choice in older homes with a gravity-fed system, or where mains pressure is low.
What affects the cost of a new boiler

The type of boiler
A like-for-like combi swap is the simplest job. Converting from a regular or system boiler to a combi means taking out the cylinder and loft tanks and reworking the pipework, which adds time.
Where it goes
Keeping the boiler where it is costs least. Moving it means a new flue route, gas supply and condensate drain.
The gas supply
A new boiler can need more gas than the old one. If the existing pipe is too small to deliver it, it has to be upgraded to meet the manufacturer's requirements.
The state of the system
Sludge in old radiators and pipework shortens a new boiler's life, so the system is cleaned before the new one goes on, and a magnetic filter keeps it clean afterwards.
Controls
Building regulations set the minimum controls for a new boiler: a programmer and room thermostat at least, and in England a new combi also needs an energy-saving feature such as a smart thermostat or weather compensation.
