Boiler broken down? Five checks first

Some breakdowns are one of these, and you can rule each out safely yourself. None of them involves opening the boiler. If none of them helps, ring us.

Check the pressure gauge

Most combi and system boilers want 1 to 1.5 bar with the heating cold, and lock out below that to protect themselves. You can top up through the filling loop as your boiler's manual describes. If it keeps falling, there is a leak to find, and that is a job for us.

Look for a frozen condensate pipe

In a hard frost the plastic pipe that drains a condensing boiler outside can freeze and shut it down, often with a gurgle and a fault code. Pour warm, not boiling, water along the outside section, then reset the boiler.

Power, timer and thermostat

Make sure the switch by the boiler is on, the timer is calling for heat and the thermostat is set above room temperature. After a power cut, programmers often need setting again.

Check the gas supply

If the hob lights, gas is reaching the house. If nothing lights, check a prepayment meter has credit and the valve beside the meter is on.

Reset once, then call

Press reset once, as the manual says. If it locks out again, stop: repeated resets can hide a fault. Note any fault code and ring us. Never take the casing off, and if you smell gas, call 0800 111 999 first.

Questions we get asked

  • First, check your boiler's pressure gauge (should be 1-1.5 bar) and ensure the thermostat is set correctly. If these are fine and the boiler shows an error code, note it down and call us. We offer emergency callouts in Colchester and surrounding areas.

  • Frequent pressure loss usually indicates a leak somewhere in your heating system, either from the boiler, radiators, or pipework. Sometimes it's a faulty pressure relief valve. We can diagnose and fix the cause quickly.

  • We aim to respond to emergency callouts the same day where possible. For Colchester, Wivenhoe, and Tiptree, we typically arrive within a few hours during working hours.

  • Yes, we repair all major boiler brands including Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal, Baxi, Potterton, Viessmann, and more. Our engineers carry common spare parts for faster repairs.

  • Repair costs depend on the fault and parts needed. We provide honest, upfront pricing before starting any work. There are no hidden charges, you'll know the cost before we proceed.

  • As a rough guide, replacement starts to make more sense when a boiler is over 10 to 15 years old, its parts are getting hard to find, or one repair would cost a large share of a new boiler. Otherwise a repair is usually the better spend. We will tell you honestly which applies to yours.
